Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is strictly defined as the amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic bacteria to completely break down the organic waste present in a certain volume of a water sample.
It is usually measured in parts per million (ppm). A low BOD (less than ) indicates clean water, while a high BOD (greater than ) indicates highly polluted water.
