The atmosphere isn't just a uniform blanket of gas; it is a highly structured, dynamic system with distinct layers, each serving a unique purpose. Let's take a journey upward from the surface of the Earth to understand where we live and where our weather is born.

The Layers Above Us

Our atmosphere is divided into several layers based on temperature gradients and composition. The two most critical layers for our daily lives and the environment are the troposphere and the stratosphere.
Imagine standing on the ground. The air you are breathing right now belongs to the lowest layer of the atmosphere, known as the troposphere. This layer extends from the Earth's surface up to an average height of about (though it can be thicker at the equator and thinner at the poles).

Where the Weather Happens

The troposphere is incredibly dense compared to the layers above it. It holds about 75% of the atmosphere's total mass and almost 99% of its water vapor and aerosols.
Because it contains so much water vapor and is constantly churned by convection currents (warm air rising and cold air sinking), the troposphere is the birthplace of all our weather. When you see a thunderstorm brewing, rain falling, or fluffy white clouds drifting by, you are witnessing the dynamic nature of the troposphere. Therefore, the region where clouds form is strictly the troposphere.
And since this layer extends from the ground up, it is also the region where all terrestrial life exists. We build our homes, fly our kites, and breathe the air entirely within the troposphere.

The Protective Shield

If we were to travel higher, crossing the mark, we would leave the turbulent weather behind and enter the stratosphere, which extends up to about above sea level.
The stratosphere is starkly different from the troposphere. It is very dry, meaning clouds rarely form here. Commercial jet airliners often cruise in the lower stratosphere to avoid the turbulent weather below.
More importantly, the stratosphere is home to the ozone layer. This concentration of ozone () acts as Earth's sunscreen, absorbing about 99.5% of the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Without this protective shield in the stratosphere, life on Earth's surface would be severely damaged by UV rays.
