The Protective Blanket
Imagine our Earth floating in the vast, cold expanse of space. What keeps it warm and hospitable for life? It is wrapped in a protective blanket called the atmosphere.
This atmosphere is a delicate mixture of gases that maintains the perfect temperature balance.
The Solar Dance
Every day, the Sun sends massive amounts of energy towards the Earth in the form of solar radiation. This energy consists mostly of visible light and ultraviolet rays.
Because these waves have short wavelengths, they easily pass through the atmosphere and reach the Earth's surface, warming it up.
The Infrared Reflection
Once the Earth absorbs this solar energy, it doesn't just hold onto it forever. It reflects the energy back towards space.
However, the reflected energy is no longer visible light; it is transformed into long-wave infrared radiation, which we feel as heat.
The Role of Carbon Dioxide
This is where greenhouse gases like CO2 come into play. While CO2 allows short-wave solar radiation to pass through, it is highly effective at absorbing long-wave infrared radiation.
When the Earth tries to radiate heat back into space, the CO2 molecules in the atmosphere intercept it. They absorb the heat and re-radiate it in all directions, including back down to the Earth's surface.
The Consequence of Excess
A certain amount of CO2 is essential; without it, the Earth would freeze. But what happens when we release excessive amounts of CO2 through burning fossil fuels and deforestation?
More CO2 means a thicker "blanket." More infrared heat is trapped, and less escapes into space. This continuous trapping of heat leads to a steady rise in the Earth's average temperature.
This phenomenon is exactly what we call Global Warming. Therefore, the excessive release of CO2 directly results in global warming.
