The True Nature of Glass
When we look at a windowpane or a drinking glass, our intuition tells us that it is a solid. It feels hard, it shatters when dropped, and it maintains its shape. However, the scientific classification of glass is far more fascinating and slightly counterintuitive.

Amorphous Solids
To understand what glass truly is, we must first look at how solids are structured at the atomic level. Solids are broadly classified into two categories: crystalline and amorphous.
Crystalline solids, like quartz, diamond, or common table salt, have a highly ordered, repeating three-dimensional arrangement of atoms or molecules. This regular pattern is known as a crystal lattice.
On the other hand, amorphous solids lack this long-range order. Their constituent particles are arranged randomly, much like the molecules in a liquid. Glass falls into this second category. It is an amorphous solid, meaning its internal structure is chaotic and disordered.
The Supercooled Liquid
Because glass lacks a regular crystalline lattice, it does not behave like a "true" solid. Instead, its structure is essentially that of a liquid that has been cooled so rapidly that its molecules did not have time to arrange themselves into an ordered crystal lattice. They are simply frozen in place.
Fascinatingly, because of this liquid-like internal structure, glass possesses a property characteristic of liquids: fluidity. Glass has a very slight tendency to flow over extremely long periods of time. Because of this unique behavior, scientists classify glass not as a true solid, but as a pseudo-solid or a supercooled liquid.
Composition of Common Glass
The most common type of glass, often used for bottles, jars, and windows, is known as soda-lime glass. It is a supercooled, non-crystalline mixture primarily composed of sodium silicates and calcium silicates.
So, the next time you look through a glass window, remember that you are not looking through a true solid, but rather a liquid that has been frozen in time!
